So your GM car or truck’s steering is loose and sloppy and you don’t want to spend the money or you’re not ready to change the steering box? I’ve got the fix for you. These recirculating ball steering boxes can be adjusted to remove some of the slop. This procedure is the same on just about all GM steering boxes from the early 60’s all the way through the 90’s until rack and pinions became common on cars. I’m adjusting the steering box on the 1965 Buick Riviera, and I’ll show you what it looks like on a 1964 GM A body, which is the mid size Chevelle and Malibu line, as well as a 1981 Monte Carlo, which is the 1978-87 G Body line. I also know that the GM trucks, like the Squarebody also have the same style of steering box with adjustment screw and lock nut.

The procedure is very simple, loosen the lock nut and tighten the adjustment screw. Like with anything that turns like this, it’s easier to add more and sneak up on it slowly to work the slop out as opposed to tightening it down until you can’t turn it anymore. By no means is this an alternative to replacing a steering box that needs to be replaced, this is something that can be done to help adjust one that may have some wear and not be at the end of its service life. The best part is that this is one of those free things that you can do and instantly improve how your car feels.

This is something you can easily do to make your classic more enjoyable to drive by eliminating some of the slop and wander as you go down the road.  So, try this before you replace your steering box to see if this fixes your problem!
