We’ve all been there, winter comes and your mind is full of the projects that you could do with your car over the winter. You’ve worked out the budget, and the parts are on their way. I know that time can be limited to devote to your Classic, Hot Rod, Race Car or other project vehicles. So, how do you determine what projects you do first? Sometimes, you do them in the order that parts arrive, if all the parts arrive at about the same time, how do you choose? Let’s talk about this and I’ll offer my insight into this.

First is safety concerns. If you know there are issues with things like the brakes or other safety items that will ensure you get back to your family, those are the first ones I would tackle, even if they’re not the most fun projects. Bad brakes and broken suspension parts can ruin your day faster than anything else and I want to see you get home to your family and live to cruise another day.

The second thing on my list would be the ones that would make the car better to drive. These may be things that turn into safety issues if left alone. Worn but not bad suspension parts, steering gear that’s been around a few thousand miles and is getting loose, Carburetor work or a part of the charging system that’s showing its age are all options.

The third ones I would start to look at are the ones that would make the driving experience even better. This could be things that are on the want list, like performance upgrades or getting the Air Conditioning working again. This may also be a good time to work on cosmetic upgrades too. Things like carpet or interior work, upgrading the lighting (which sometimes can fit into the safety section if the lighting is that questionable). This is definitely the category that we all like most, the fun stuff!

The best thing I can offer is the encouragement to get out there and make your project better and work towards the goals that you’ve set! Winter may also be a good time to learn a new skill, and that’s a story for another day.
