Today is a great day to swap off the original 1965 Buick Riviera steering wheel so that it can be restored. Since I want this car to be driveable, I’m putting on a new wheel kit from ebay seller mqproducts. This includes the new faux wood wheel and the correct Grant 4181 adapter kit. I have found one issue with this specific Grant kit in this application. The spring pin provided for the turn signal auto cancel is not long enough to contact the mechanism. My fix was to head to the local Tractor supply and get a big hair pin / cotter pin for a tractor and cut a section 1.5” long and insert that into the correct hole on the Grant hub adapter.

The removal of the old wheel is pretty straightforward and really doesn’t take too long to do. I used a steering wheel puller that I picked up a forever ago, you can get a similar model here: https://amzn.to/3ENOfHx

The assembly is straightforward too, everything went in place like it was supposed to, with the exception of the auto canceler, the instructions provided in the Grant adapter were clear and matched what I was seeing. Towards the end, when I was putting on the horn button, the instructions recommend using a piece of tape to hold the spring in place while you put the horn button on. I figured I could do this without the tape… I was sure wrong on that one! Tape the spring in place by any method you see fit, otherwise that little guy will jump around and never line up in a way that the horn button goes on.

With the turn signal auto cancel issue addressed, the wheel not only looks great, it functions exactly like it’s supposed to. Now to work towards restoring the original wheel. That’s for another day, this car is too much fun to drive!
