New tools in the garage today! I just picked up the Skil Auto Hammer. This is another too from their 12 volt line, and I have to say, I’m impressed with the entire Skil line. I’ll unbox this and show you exactly what comes in the box and how I’ll use it to drive some nails in.

Now, why would you want an auto hammer? I have had tennis elbow and carpal tunnel problems for several years and swinging a hammer more than a few times makes my arm and hand ache for a very long time afterwards. This provides an option that can help alleviate that pain and discomfort. For two, it’s a power tool and it’s fun! This also provides an option to get into tight spaces that there really isn’t room to swing a hammer. I realize that this will not replace the sledge hammer or the BFH, this does help with the other times that you don’t need a hammer that big to get the job done.

In this video, I’ll drive some nails of various sizes and show how it does. I tested it on everything from a 3+ inch nail, a fence staple, a coax staple, a roofing nail as well as a more delicate finishing nail. This drove them all in very nicely and very controllably. The magnetic collet is a nice touch to help keep the nail in line and makes it easy to use.

As far as the tool itself goes, it fits the hand very nicely and the rubber grips hit the hand very nicely and isn’t that heavy or hard to use. I’m very pleased with the performance of this tool.
