This 2002 Monte Carlo was experiencing some front end vibration over 55 mph and some unusual tire wear on the left front as well as some clatter from the CV’s as I turn it into a parking spot. I’m going to fix that with a new pair of CV axles and a new wheel bearing and hub assembly. This is not a very difficult job, but it does call for a few unique tools like a 35 mm socket and a torque wrench capable of 120 ft-lbs. Otherwise, this is something that can easily be done in your garage.

Here’s a link to a 35 mm socket

Need a torque wrench? Look at this one!

The best place to start is to loosen the axle nut while the car is still on the ground. Then jack it up and stabilize it with jack stands. Next, take the wheel off, and begin by removing the caliper and caliper mount. WIth the rotor off, now is a good time to dislodge the CV from the hub. With a hammer, hit the end of the axle to force it inwards. Next remove the 2 bolts that hold the knuckle or spindle to the strut, these are likely going to need a hammer to remove. After that the knuckle can tilt away and the CV can be removed. Apply some prying force to remove the CV from the transmission. Sometimes a few smacks with a hammer can help if you can get a pry bar on it. That usually works better on the passenger side, the drivers side does not have the same clearance and you may have to use a pry bar without the help of a hammer.

With the CV out of the way, I replaced the hub too. It has 3 bolts and wiring for the ABS sensor. Once those are undone, it’s a matter of swap the parts with the new ones and reverse disassembly.

Once everything is back together, torque the axle nut. I torqued mine to 120 ft-lbs. Test drive the car to make sure that everything is in good shape and double check the torque after the test drive.

This is not a hard project and can easily be handled in an afternoon.
