In this step-by-step guide, we’ll show you how to fix the leaking radiator on a 2002 Monte Carlo SS! Join me as I dive into the repair process, find some hidden damage and share tips and tricks for a successful DIY job.

This is a pretty simple job with radiators easily found for these cars. They share the chassis with other GM cars like the Impala and the Pontiac Grand Prix of the same years. This radiator came from Autozone and was in stock.

To do this easily, I found that removing the battery and the air box made it easier to work around. I started with the fender to core support bars and then upper motor mounts. This is when things went bad… I found that one ear of the engine’s side mount had broken, leaving only one good ear. This is not uncommon for these to break, I’ll be hitting a junkyard later to find this piece. WIth the upper mounts removed, and the engine rocked back, it was time to drain the radiator and transmission cooler lines. I’m using a big external cooler to help keep this transmission alive.

There is a little push pin on the bottom of the radiator and fan shroud that keep everything connected, that can be removed from the bottom as long as you know it’s there. With that removed, it makes it easy to separate the fans from the radiator.

Next you’ll transfer all the fittings over, making sure everything looks right. It’s far easier to fix an issue now while it’s in front of you. After that, install the radiator and put all the pieces back where they belong. I did find that the new O rings on the transmission cooler fittings made installation a little stiff, keep that in mind.

Once you have things together, fill up the radiator and check for leaks. A quick test drive will make sure that all systems are go before you need to use the car for its daily purpose.
