Confession time. I’m a serial procrastinator. I’ll put things off until they can no longer be put off or I find I’m at a complete and total work stoppage. It’s something I’m definitely working on and I can only get better by taking action.

How can we get better about this? I was reading a post on social media talking about the 5 minute trick. The 5 minute trick can work because we may not think that we have time in our schedule to block off a few hours in the garage, and we all know we can spend 5 minutes doing something. There’s the trick, we know how much time we really have to spend before we need to do something else, and by saying that we’ll only spend 5 minutes on it gets us out there to the garage to do something. Simple tasks like organizing our tools after the last big project can help get our mind sharpened for the next project.

That’s all well and good, but what does that really mean? It means the “5 minutes” we spend can help our brain stay interested in the project. You know the phrase “Out of sight out of mind”? It’s true. If we aren’t actively engaging with our projects and moving them forward, then it becomes easy to lose what we’re working towards. Speaking for me personally for my projects, moving forward with them means that I can get the old shed torn apart and the new one built so the I can get the outdoor lawn care stuff out of the garage. It means I can get the wiring and cement done in the shop and have a space I really want to be in. It means I can get my El Camino ready for the upcoming race season and go enjoy the car that I’ve built. It means I can teach my kids how to fix things and get involved with their lives too.

It’s only 5 minutes right? Soon you’ll have your project ready to go and you can be proud of what you’ve built.

Let’s go build something!

I’ll see you in the garage!
