Could your sleep be holding you back from better performance on the track? I know that I’ve had a few nights at the track on multi day events where I wished I had slept better. The things I noticed that were most impacted were my reaction times and ability to be focused. I found it easier to be distracted as I approached the starting line and wasn’t as consistent at putting the car in the beams. My reaction times are typically slower and are less consistent when I’ve not slept well. I’ve spent some time keeping track of what helps me sleep and helps me perform better.
I’m not a nutritionist or an expert in the field, what I eat makes a difference. If I have too many sugary carbs like too many Sodas or sweet things like cookies. Those do 2 things, the sugar in the short term is an issue as does ensuring that my body can sleep. Too many carbs and my body isn’t happy with getting good rest.
Caffeine can also be a problem, especially later in the day. I do like a little caffeine in the morning to get going, and that can easily be overdone. Too much caffeine and I’ll be jumpy and more likely to go red. Caffeine can take 5 hours to metabolize through the body and I know it makes my sleep very rough, both on getting to sleep and the quality of sleep.
I’m also not a huge fan of sleep aid medications, they can affect other areas of the brain and nervous system. That effect is hard to predict unless you have a long history. I tend to prefer the more natural routes here. I do use frequency therapy a fair bit for other things, I use a WavWatch, which has settings that can help for nearly anything. There’s a sleep disorder setting that can put me to sleep in less than 10 minutes. Anecdote on that, I had a sinus infection, and there are several sinus settings. I set the WavWatch to play the next track which is in alphabetical order. The next one up is the sleep disorder setting. When it started, my wife noticed I was nearly asleep while eating lunch! I realized it was the sleep disorder setting that was putting my right to sleep! It really worked, and worked quickly. I was nearly asleep in less than 10 minutes.
