As it turns out, there’s all kinds of lessons that I can share with you about moving your shop 1100 miles. I discovered many of these not while unloading or unpacking, but trying to do the right thing and maintain the family hauler. Who knew that changing the oil could become such an ordeal! Here’s my list of things to keep in mind when you move.

Dirt floors in the garage aren’t much fun.

Keep some of the bigger pieces of cardboard, like furniture boxes, for use in the previously identified dirt garage.

You may find that you have no idea where anything is, and that’s okay. Pick up another inexpensive oil drain pan, you’ll use it for something.

make sure that you travel with a jack and jackstands easily available. If you get a flat, you’ll thank yourself. You’ll also thank yourself when you don’t need to tear apart everything to do simple maintenance.

Pack your funnels better than you think and away from heavy objects. They get crushed and break. All except the one weird funnel. It’ll never die.

The new shop will make noises you aren’t used to. The breeze rattled my sliding doors and made me jump out from under the Yukon for fear of getting crushed.

When you’re done, it doesn’t matter where you put your stuff. It will be in the way and it will get moved a dozen more times before you organize the garage.

If you’re buying a property with some land, get the atv out as early as possible. The kids will love to go explore and drive around, mine sure did.

Even with the adversity of setting up a new shop space, and knowing that it’s not the priority,I’m still feeling very fortunate to be able to do what I’m doing.
