Today I’m working on one of the Daily Drivers, a 2002 Monte Carlo SS with the 3800 V6. The passenger side motor mount was starting to deteriorate and allow for more vibration than we wanted to have in the car. This vibration can result in broken CV shafts or other more catastrophic failures. I would really like to avoid that.
This isn’t a particularly hard repair, it does need some attention since you’ll have the engine lifted up and you’ll be working under it. Once the car is jacked up and the wheel is removed, the splash panel has some small screw push pins to remove. I did also remove the oil filter to make more room for me to work with. The nuts on the motor mount are 15mm on both sides, and are the stress prevailing lock nut style. The nice thing is that this one is oily enough the threads were well lubricated and easy to remove.
The next major step is to remove the passenger side upper motor mount to allow the engine to be raised easier and higher. I used a big 2×6 chunk of wood under the oil pan and raised the whole engine and transmission with a jack as a unit high enough to get the old mount out.
In comparing the old mount to the new mount they were the same and would line up correctly. The old mount was clearly worn, though not as bad as some that I saw examples of on the interwebs. The new mount slid in the same way the old mount came out. Now, I had an extra hand lowering the jack while I used a pry bar to manipulate the engine and transmission back into the correct place as the engine was lowered.
The remainder of the reassembly is easy, replace the nuts, and tighten them down. Make sure you tighten up anything you removed like the upper mounts. Since I had the oil filter off, I changed the oil while the car was in the air. With the fresh mount the vibration was muchly improved. This wasn’t a hard repair, keep your head on and you shouldn’t have any issues and keep your fingers where they belong!
