Today I’m working on getting the driver’s side window glass adjusted correctly on this sweet 1981 Chevrolet Monte Carlo. This is pretty easy to do and sometimes looks more overwhelming than it actually is. There are 3 main adjustments to make on these windows. The window felts holds the window out, the 2 bolts out on the edges control how far or high up into the weatherstripping the window goes and there is a 2 bolts lower near the door latch handle that control the tilt of the window. This is the same process whether its the drivers or passenger side. This also applies to the entire G Body line, which includes the Monte Carlo, Malibu, El Camino, Caballero, Cutlass, Regal, Grand Prix and the ’78 Riviera. Follow along and see how easy it is to help fix this and make your car more enjoyable to drive.
This is an easy process that anyone can do. The door panel removal seems like the hardest part when doing this job, and that’s not all that hard. Take your time not to damage the cardboard backing of the upper door panel. The lower door panel has the large number of the little plastic push clips that are easily pried out with a trim removal tool or I’ve used blunted flat blade screwdrivers to help work them out. For the manual window cars the, upper half can easily be moved out of your way as the crank can be set in place to move the window up and down.The power window cars, you will either need to work around the upper half or remove the switch, that will depend on your personal preference and the condition of your part, use your best judgment here. If you already know how far you need to move your window, make the adjustments needed and verify your work. If you’re starting from scratch, take your time and I know you will get it right. Once you are happy with the fit of your window, put everything back together and enjoy your car without the breeze blowing by your head!
