When you decide that you want a project car there are 5 things to keep in mind to make the best choice for you. If you go through these steps you will find that you will have more clarity and have more fun with the car that you choose!

1 What car do you really want? Are you looking for a muscle car, classic truck, 80’s muscle or something completely different like a newer import to swap a V8 into or a classic that isn’t a mainstream option? If you have several kinds that could be your next project that opens up possibilities and makes it easier to find the right candidate.

2 What are your plans for the car? Do you want a street cruiser for the family? A good handling car for canyons or twisty roads? A drag car with a wild over the top engine? A road race car that you can take to track days? Answering this will help you if you come across a car that has already been started down that road, that may be a good choice, especially from a budget perspective.

3 How much money you have available will help determine the condition of the car. It’s usually best to start with the best car possible, that will help avoid costly or time consuming rust repair, seeking out hard to find parts and may get you a car closer to your dream.

4 What is your skill level? Do you have the skill to be able to tackle heavy rust repair, auto body, fabrication or engine building? If you are interested in learning these skill then by all means continue onwards! This is a point that being honest with yourself can make a difference. For example, If you are working on your welding skill and are willing to put in the time and learn what you need to learn, then by all means, go after it!

5 What is your timeline? Is this a car that you want to be able to jump into and drive next week or is this a long term project that you will have for some time? Having a timeline for your build can be a good thing, like a bigger car show or events like the Goodguys events that feature a show, autocross or other racing venues. Keeping those dates on the calendar can help you keep moving forward and progressing. Coming across setbacks is not uncommon in this hobby and being reasonable with yourself is important to keep moving towards your goal.

Finally, your mindset is an important part of this hobby as it is with life! Staying positive, keeping your eye on your goals and dreams will definitely help you as you move forward!
