I’m working on the Family Hauler, my 2005 GMC Yukon XL, and the rear hatch won’t lock. This is an easy and inexpensive fix. I was able to replace the rear lock actuator with a new one off Amazon and get the rear hatch locking again! This is the same repair on the Suburban, Tahoe and Yukon with the rear hatch as opposed to the barn door style.

Here’s a link to get the Lock Actuator!

This is as simple as removing the plastic that covers the inside of the hatch, which is held on by a couple of screws and push connectors. Gently but firmly work your way around the panel to pry out all the push connectors. There is an upper and lower panel that needs to be removed. Repeat the prying around the other panel and don’t forget to remove your rear window defroster / defogger connector.

The rear actuator operates everything by 3 cables, you will need to remove those from the actuator, then remove the actuator. I was able to take the old actuator assemble to the bench and undo the fasteners holding the actuator itself to the rest of the frame. Verify that everything matches and slide the new actuator into place. Install the fasteners so that it’s held down. There were a couple configurations for how the screws go back in, it’s pretty easy to figure out.

Reinstallation is the opposite of disassembly. Start to get the actuator assembly bolted down, and run the cables back into their places. Once you get it tight and before you put the panels back on, now is a great time to test to make sure that it locks and unlocks properly. You will be able to see the actuator move. After that, it’s putting the plastics and window defrost back on.
