I used to drag race, how do I get back into it? That’s a common question I’m hearing, here’s why. I70 Motorsports Park is building a new drag strip, Flying H Drag Strip. I’ve talked to several people that used to race as KCIR and have not raced in many years. Some have sold their cars, some haven’t run in years. Here’s how I answer that question.

What did you race before? This goes one of 2 ways, what kind of car they used to race or what kind of racing they did. The kind of car they raced is a great place to start. How fast was it, was it set up for class racing like the NHRA in Stock, Superstock, or any of the Super .90 classes, or was it a bracket car? This is a question to figure out what they had. It’s also meant to figure out what kind of class they ran in, like Super Pro and leaving off the top bulb or using a transbrake or footbraking and leaving off the bottom bulb.

The next question is what do you currently have? Do you have your race car or are you going to race something more street friendly and build something up to race? I’m going to say that it’s more fun to get out on the track with something that you currently have as opposed to building something up specifically. It could be years before a new build is ready. It’s really easy to get into street legal or sportsman classes because they usually fit a majority of what people commonly have. My El Camino is a good Sportsman car and it has license plates so that if I wanted to run in a street legal class, I could. My dad has a 2002 Monte Carlo SS, this is a perfect car to come out and have fun with.

Bottom line, come out and have fun with what you have and then focus on building something. If you have the resources to buy a car that’s already set up for the kind of racing you want to do, that’s awesome too! Come out and have fun!
