Do you ever have those moments where things are going right and you know there’s something really not right about it? That’s the case here. I went to Flying H  Drag Strip for some bracket racing and did surprisingly well until I noticed that something doesn’t quite sound right. Sometimes in drag racing, we work our parts harder than the factory intended and that’s the case here. This is not the first time this has happened so I’m very much aware of what’s going on and I know that it sounds… expensive… Join me on this adventure and see if the 7.5” 10 bolt can hang on through these 2 days of bracket racing!

So, what is bracket racing and why do I do it? The simple answer is that I don’t have a fast car, and I don’t fit any of the indexes or heads up classes. Bracket racing is where you pick your own dial in, or what your car will run, and race off with other racers who have done the same. The slower cars get the head start, and if both cars ran their dial in, they should reach the other end of the track at the same time. The thing is that most of the time, the cars don’t perfectly run the number and there’s a thing called reaction time that’s added into it. Reaction time is the time that it takes for the car to leave the stage beams in relation to the green light coming on. The timer does not start until the car leaves the stage beam. So, Reaction time, plus the amount of time away from the dial in goes into your “package”. The better total package wins. Example. You have a 13.10 dial in. Your Car runs 13.12 and you cut a .050 light. Your total package is .070 of a second. If your opponent does better than .070 they will win that round. There are a few things that go into this. If you go faster than your dial in, that’s a break out and you lose unless your opponent breaks out by more. If you leave the line before the green light, that is a red light and a loss. If the track is running tru-start, and both cars red light, the lesser red light wins.

The best description that I heard is that bracket racing is a math problem that you get to solve at 100 mph. There are a lot of ways to play the game and this is the most deceptively simple sport there is. I’ll explain more about this later.
