Why You Need Them!

I’m a machinist by trade and this is a tool that will always have a place in my tool box. I like to build parts from raw stock and being able to measure it is the only way that’s going to work.The accuracy and consistency of a good pair of dial calipers is a great tool to have when you are stepping up fabrication or an engine building program. It is worth noting that these do not take the place of a micrometer, these are a tool that works right alongside where tolerance allows. 

Where You Use Them!

One of the most common places that you’ll see dial calipers in engine building is for measuring pushrod length. A 12 inch pair of Calipers are used in conjunction with an adjustable set up pushrod for determining the correct length. This ensures that the correct valvetrain geometry is achieved. 

 

I have used dial calipers for making new parts on my small lathe as well as for determining belt alignment with a straightedge. Throwing belts is typically a sign of poor pulley alignment, and ensuring that it is straight helps keep the belt in place during higher engine RPM. 

Making new parts are also a place where calipers are used. It’s a quick and easy way to measure parts while they’re still on the machine and ensure that the correct size is achieved.
